Inventory: What items will your character have with them? Do not feel obligated to note worn items unless they have a special ability.
  • A purse with common items
  • A laptop
  • A cell phone
  • A flanged mace, silver head, about 1 ft. long
  • Two daggers
  • Pet dog: Jun. Rhodesian Ridgeback, female. Physically a puppy, actually several years old.
Powers —

Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of literature: Mayuko is well-read, and has insight into literary aspects such as how the publishing field works and current trends.
  • Book repair and preservation: As her family owns an antique bookstore and in her role as CFUD librarian, Mayuko has hands-on experience with minor repair work.
  • Pedagogy: Mayuko is a veteran teacher. She is authoritative within the classroom setting, and this will probably carry over into her new work/ "work" environment.
  • Library science: While not formally instructed, Mayuko has several years of experience managing a library for public use. Her specialty is acquisitions.
  • Basic combat skills: Mayuko is willing to defend herself and others. After adventuring on and off in the Caves of Despair, she has basic experience utilizing blunt weapons and daggers. (She can also safely operate a shotgun, but hers was not brought to Meta and I do not foresee her using one here.)

Superpowers:

1. Energy Field Manipulation: When Superpower Weekends hit CFUD, Mayuko acquired energy-based powers. The first iteration gave her shielding capability, in which the field can envelop her body. By the end of the second iteration, she was able to make whips and generate barriers. These abilities have manifested here. The field feels aversive to targets and may also have a energy-vampiric element as a way to recoup her expenditure.

2. Dimensional Storage (small). Inspired by her friendship with one Ramona Flowers, Mayuko has gained a pocket storage. The access point is level to the small of her back. The items listed under Inventory will be within the pocket upon arrival.

3. Linguistic Intuition: Mayuko is able to read unencoded texts written in almost any language. (Automatic comprehension not included.) The language of the text must be either a language from Earth, or have a speaker currently on Earth.

4. Indexing: As she reads a text, Mayuko can mentally store the information for about two months. She will also be able to reproduce word for word from what she has currently indexed, through writing or word-processing. After that moderate amount of time, the information will fade-- exact recall and reproduction will be impossible without indexing the source again.

Limitations:

General: Mayuko is from a peaceful canon. Her main exposure to violent conflict was during her stay in CFUD; even then, her main targets were dungeon creatures, not human beings. The full scope and limits of Mayuko's powers are unknown at the start. As such, she will start off conflicted about how useful she will be: she is aware that there are stronger metas out there, good and bad. While she can put up a fight, she doesn't want to drag her allies down. She will try to hide these doubts, but the perceptive can pick them up.

However unsure she is before a mission, she is stubborn once she's in the thick of things, reluctant to withdraw without finishing her objective. Her loyalty can be used against her; if friends/allies get involved in something, she will join the fray. She also has a strong drive to protect young people. These are ways to draw her into situations that she would otherwise think twice about, such as an extended fight.

Energy Manipulation: It is based on Mayuko's store of physical/chemical energy. If she uses this talent for extended periods of time, she will exhaust herself. As a survival tactic, she might try to draw energy from opponents or others nearby. If she's too desperate, she risks draining too much. Sharp edges can slice through fields; trying to reinforce fielding to prevent this uses extra energy.

Dimensional Storage: It is not a bottomless inventory; carrying capacity will not exceed three backpacks' worth of space.

Linguistic Intuition: She is unable to instantly decode encrypted text. Con-langs or fictional languages are a no-go-- unless Daenerys Targaryan shows up, she won't be reading High Valyrian, for example.

Indexing: The indexing cannot be engaged by skimming the text or just flipping the pages. The amount that she can process at one time will be low to start, but can be increased with practice. There are also limits to how much total can be indexed; indexed items might be erased without her knowledge to free up space.

Personality
;
What were your character's most formative experiences?:

1. Secret-keeping Hatori Sohma and Kana Sohma's relationship (pre-canon, explored through flashback in Vol 10)

Two years prior to the start of Fruits Basket, Mayuko's best friend Kana began work as a medical assistant for a distant relative, Hatori Sohma. Sometime into Kana's tenure, the two fell in love. Because the head of the family (Akito) disapproved of certain family members having romantic bonds, they had to keep the relationship a secret. However, Kana wanted her best friend to meet Hatori. At the meeting, Mayuko fell in love with Hatori, much to her own dismay. Not wanting to betray her friend, she managed to hide her feelings from the two, but not from Shigure, another relative of Hatori's.

When Hatori and Kana asked Akito for permission to marry, Akito flew into a rage, blinding Hatori in one eye and then proceeding to blame Kana, who suffered a mental breakdown. Mayuko was informed of this outrage some time after the fact. Shigure helped her to see Kana but it was too late; there was nothing that she could do to restore Kana's peace of mind. Eventually, the choice was made for Hatori to suppress Kana's memories of the relationship; Mayuko was warned that Kana could relapse if she remembered her connection to Hatori and must keep her knowledge from her best friend.

Mayuko is very loyal towards those she cares about; she was willing to sacrifice her own happiness to see her friend and the man they both loved happy. Her loyalty can also make her stubborn, and unwilling to put her desires before others'. She is trusted as a secret-keeper both during and after the relationship. In Meta, she will be willing and able to keep secrets for the metas she meets and to keep the Sohmas' secret from everyone (at least as long as possible.) She will do her best to keep her commitments, and support friends and allies to the best of her ability

2. Arrival in CFUD (November 2008)

The director of CFUD had a variety of ways to bring people to Camp. Teleporting them was an option, but she was also good at tricking people into traveling to the camp premises. Mayuko was a case of the latter-- a notice was sent that Camp “Fairies Under Dales” was in need of book donations. A representative for the “kind donors” was asked to accompany the delivery, and Mayuko went in place of her parents. When she arrived, she got stuffed into a large cardboard box and hauled it to the Center of Camp for collection. Cue alarm and amusement from four different Sohmas. Mayuko was rather offput by the situation, but the sight of familiar faces tempered her reaction. Hatori being used to making decisions for the good of others, he decided that she would stay with him, rather than allow Mayuko's cabin assignment to be randomized.

This was a formative experience because it illustrates how far Mayuko will go to support people that she cares about. Mayuko went through with traveling (on a post-Thankgiving weekend!) because her parents needed her to. It is also significant because this was her first experience with alternate worlds. This was still Earth, but nine years in the future. Given that another cabin occupant was Albus Dumbledore himself, Mayuko wised up to the fact that a wide variety of people could arrive. The big shift will be how the lack of familiar support impacts her first few months. Despite the hazards from the environment and other residents, Mayuko was kept insulated. Now she has to shift for herself (and Jun) from the start; I am very interested in how this will affect the connections she makes with everyone.

3. Desperate Times, Desperate Measures (Summer 2009)

Before Mayuko arrived in CFUD, Shigure made the acquaintance of one Dietrich von Lohengrin through friendship with Abel Nightroad both from Trinity Blood). Dietrich was the sort of person who got his kicks puppeting people into harming themselves and others! This escalated into an attack that left Shigure heavily wounded and Dietrich facing multiple tortuous deaths. But in CFUD, death was cheap-- you would come back to life eventually. Dietrich kept a low profile until Akito Sohma showed up in CFUD, found out that Dietrich had traumatized Shigure, and went and antagonized Dietrich personally.

As a result, Dietrich decided it was time to go after the Sohma family. He physically tortured one and puppeted another into feeling extreme nerve pain. Both were able to escape, and the family stayed secluded together. Contact with Mayuko was cut off in their efforts to keep her safe from Dietrich. The situation was resolved when Hatori confronted Dietrich and suppressed his memory of the Sohmas. Later, he apologized to Mayuko and explained what had happened.

Mayuko was impacted because it highlighted how vulnerable she was perceived as being. She is someone willing to defend herself, but as someone without magic or superhuman abilities, she would have been at a big disadvantage. Mayuko felt the need to start delving into the Caves of Despair so that she could be a better protector. She was tired of being a bystander, and in Meta she will want to be of service and help others however she can. Secondly, it made Mayuko take a harder view of people like Dietrich. How could people like him be punished for their transgressions? Death was a temporary setback. Locking him up and throwing away the key was infeasible because the people best able to guard prisoners were the ones needed in emergencies. Erasing his memory was for the best in this situation. In Meta, when she encounters run-of-the-mill goons, she is all for K.O.ing them and letting the authorities handle them, but for the unrepentant and horrific, she will deal with them harshly as they deserve.

What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?

Mayuko is a person who will want to follow her community's legal and social demands. Teachers are expected to be models of correct behavior, and she holds herself to a high moral standard. She strongly dislikes the thought of having to change her mind and alter course. So if she agrees to compromise her principles, she will try to keep things above board. Her top priority will be to minimize damage. Since her time in CFUD, she does veer away from lawfulness in one particular aspect. If there are unrepentant people with a history of violence hurting others, she believes that they should be punished to the harshest extent, even up to capital punishment, as explained above.

What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?

Mayuko is afraid of powerlessness, unable to take action and protect the people she cares for. For example, it was devastating for her to discover after the fact that Hatori had been attacked and Kana suffering a mental breakdown. In CFUD, this feeling grew by knowing that there were people with powers, magic, combat training who could handle dangerous situations while she could not. Now that she does have powers, she will be driven to use them. As mentioned in Limitations, she will initially be doubtful. However, once she sorts out her abilities and the niche she could fill, the desire to be of service and help others will grow.

What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
Mayuko's main goal is to get a handle on this alternate-Earth situation. In her previous setting, she was one of the last people from her world to arrive, landing into a very protective web of alliances and friendships. Now she is one of the first from her world here, so learning whatever she can about this Earth is not just to get herself situated, but also to help HER people get a leg up. Whatever guild she becomes a part of, she will want to get involved and help. She'll give her city a lot of attention, and will want to keep apprised of who's also stationed there.

Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:

  • I believe that the transition from bystander to hero-ish would be interesting to explore. Mayuko witnessed lots of people stepping up to face serious threats. Now that she's gained abilities of her own, she will be motivated to be of service, belatedly paying back the people who protected her and other civilians before.
  • She will likely join the Alliance. With her full skill set, she'll be a prime information gatherer and receptacle, so I hope she gets to engage in scenarios where that is a key objective.
  • Mayuko would lean towards Sunset Falls since working at the library would be fantastic. (The schedule would be more forgiving of heroing than teaching would be, most likely). While the Alliance may send her to the other towns on assignment, she will be invested in the mythos and keeping people safe from... whatever is out there.
