Sidereal: Premise and Abbreviated Sidereal History .

Mayuko has been a diligent explorer of Sidereal for roughly four months (two IRL years). She spends most of her days looking into the zones and navigating the various status effects in play on any given day. Her main strategies are to assist others who might be unaware or unused to being under effects, or to find her group of friends and resolve the effects ASAP. It depends on who she encounters first! She takes care of her companion Jun, a young Rhodesian Ridgeback she adopted from her previous previous-game Camp Fuck U Die, and maintains a runner’s lifestyle to keep up with the pup. She also trains with mace and dagger to prepare for the rare disruptive incident that arises. She visits the library often for books to read and to use the media players which are lacking in the resident condominiums. As a bedtime ritual, she composes an entry for her log of cumulative interdimensional experiences (begun shortly after her arrival in Sidereal). When a journal is filled, she crafts a(n edited) duplicate to house in the Sidereal library for posterity.

One of Mayuko’s chief accomplishments is the conversion of an empty warehouse in the center of Sidereal to a mess hall & community kitchen. This was a collaboration with the sorceress Vasilisa, a more senior resident. Observing a lack of large centralized meeting places among the facilities available, and learning that there were several residents lacking culinary skill and eating substandard diets as a result, Mayuko took action and voiced her claim on the warehouse. She and Vasilisa prepared the site, acquired appliances, furniture and furnishings and opened the Restaurant (which she inwardly refers to as the Mess Hall). The management of the place occupies her time, especially given that the city food supply is underground and accessible only with elevators. She makes daily trips to restock the Mess Hall's supplies, cleans the premises and organizes efforts to cook at least one hot meal a day for the community. She also compiles binders of beginner-friendly recipes for those learning how to make food for themselves.

The most recent significant event for her has been the occurrence of “Heart Games”. These are deep dives into the subconscious of trapped player-characters by other characters. The typical goal is to interact with facets of the host's psyche in an effort to jointly free oneself and awaken the host. Mayuko was a trapped character, and also was one of several people projected into the subconscious of one Jason Todd. Mayuko and Jason each successfully (if painfully) freed the other from their “prison” and awoke alongside the other freed hosts and participants. A few days later, a huge waterpark materialized in the beach zone and was made accessible to characters. This could be seen as a reward for the massive emotional toil expended by all affected. Many characters celebrated there, or simply took the chance to decompress. Mayuko is taken from just after this point.

abilities:

Advanced knowledge of literature: Mayuko is well-read, and has insight into literary aspects such as how the publishing field works, common story tropes and current trends in fiction and nonfiction.

Book repair and preservation: As her family owns an antique bookstore, Mayuko has hands-on experience with minor repair work.

Pedagogy: Mayuko is a veteran teacher. She is authoritative within the classroom setting, and likes being able to instruct and help others. She is accustomed to creating and following plans, adapting to changes and evaluating herself, others and the materials she has to work with.

Project management: Through her management of the library in Camp Fuck U Die for five years, establishment of the Mess Hall/Restaurant, as well as composing daily entries in and producing copies of her journals in Sidereal, Mayuko shows perseverance and commitment to self-determined, long-term tasks. She is able to set sustainable goals and reasonable limits, anticipate what materials might needed for future steps, and persist through difficulties.

Library science: While not formally instructed, Mayuko has several years of experience managing a library for public use. Her specialty is acquisitions. She is able to find and organize information efficiently, and to use systems and programs to aid in her tasks.

Emotional auras: Mayuko may inadvertently project an aura into her surroundings when she is feeling intense emotion. First: a “blizzard aura” of anger while maintaining a polite facade. (We might call it an extreme display of “icy politeness”.) Also: a violent aura of rage (which extends to her eyes glowing), more openly aggressive. While only a cold sensation was felt in the presence of the former aura, the physical aspects of the rage aura were noted by the sole witnessing character, (i.e. “Your eyes are glowing!”) In accordance with anime/manga tropes, the red aura might indicate a temporary rise in physical strength or power, but in canon she does not demonstrate that aspect.

Basic combat skills: Mayuko is willing to defend herself and the people she cares for. She is also protective of young people in a general sense. Based on her adventures in previous games, she has experience with both a blunt melee weapon (a mace, preferred) and daggers. She also received training with a shotgun (good for use in a zombie summer camp), centered around general usage and safe maintenance and storage. She maintains a healthy and active lifestyle, which lends her speed and endurance.

personality:

Mayuko, at her core, wants to be (and be seen as) someone people can rely on. She wants to stand up for and protect the people that she cares about. She cares for the community, and wants the community to care for its own. She finds purpose in being informative and of service to others.

Mayuko is most serious when “on the job”. She is a teacher who does not take insubordination inside her classroom; for example, she steps in personally to break up a fight involving one of her homeroom students. However, when not in the classroom proper, she is an admired figure of authority-- she responds less harshly to minor infractions, believing these almost-adults should be free to live a little. She overall supports law and order, but does not believe in overextending control to micromanage lives.

Mayuko is also presented as a loyal friend and an able secret-keeper. She falls in love with college bestie Kana’s secretive paramour (Hatori) herself, but hides those feelings deep to protect the couple’s happiness together. When Kana suffers a mental breakdown due to trauma, Mayuko (the best equipped to console her) is smuggled to her. The intervention fails, but while Kana’s memory is suppressed to save her life, Mayuko’s is spared. She carries the memory of the relationship, both out of respect for the losses Hatori suffered and to protect Kana from further harm. I take Mayuko as being slow to label someone a friend. Once that barrier is crossed, she is ride-or-die for them. She is at her most selfless when acting for their benefit, willing to keep their secrets ahead of her own, at times to her own embarrassment.

Camp Fuck U Die (aka CFUD) was Mayuko’s first brush with the multiverse, which influenced her in significant ways. One was that she became highly aware of her vulnerability as an arrival from a quiet world. She observed she would be outmatched by opponents from other worlds. As such, she has committed to train and improve herself. She has a small arsenal of weapons that she first used on the monsters in the poetically named “Caves of Despair”. In gamified terms, she would be a dexterous character to face, and tenacious when fighting to defend others. Secondly, she takes a harder view against wrongdoers. There was no formal justice system in place. Asking someone to guard a criminal was removing them from the defense of the community. Capital punishment was a slap on the wrist. Mayuko came to realize that the only way to dissuade criminal behavior against other residents was the threat (and infliction) of death on perpetrators repeatedly! In painful ways! While she still believes in her home’s justice system, her stance while on nexus-worlds is that if there are unrepentant people with a history of violence hurting others caught hurting others, they should be punished to the harshest extent, even up to capital punishment.

While she hardened herself in CFUD, Mayuko leaned into the supportive community in Sidereal. As mentioned above, she brought about the Mess Hall Restaurant to be a safe gathering place. She saw the areas of the city open up through the interconnectedness of the people she met and cared for. She leveraged her knowledge from home and her experiences in CFUD to bolster her comrades and prepare them for the strangeness they might face each other. She hopes to do the same here.
